Genesis 1–2
The Bible begins before there were any people to tell a story. Its first book, Genesis, takes us back to darkness over deep water and a world that had not yet taken shape. God spoke, and light appeared. He separated the light from the darkness, calling them day and night, and the first day passed from evening into morning.
Over six days, God made a world where life could grow. He made the sky, gathered the waters into seas, and brought dry land into view. Plants grew on the land, and lights in the sky marked the days and seasons. The empty places filled with life: fish in the seas, birds in the air and animals across the earth. As each part took its place, God saw that it was good. The world was becoming a home for the people he would make.

Mark 1:21–3:6
In Capernaum, a town beside the lake, people were struck by the authority with which Jesus taught in their synagogue. Mark tells how he freed a man from an evil spirit there, then went to Simon Peter’s house and healed his mother-in-law of a fever. By evening, people were bringing others who were sick or troubled to the door. They could see his message about God’s kingdom taking shape in changed lives.
As the crowds grew, Jesus still went away alone to pray and continued to other towns. A man with a serious skin disease begged to be made clean, and Jesus reached out and touched him. After healing him, Jesus sent him to the priest with the offering required by the law of Moses, so his recovery could be recognized.

And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
Matthew 21:14 (KJV)
Matthew tells a temple clearing too. Tables over, the same crash, sellers driven out. And the next thing that happens in his telling, the very next verse, is that the blind and the lame come to him there, in the temple, and he heals them.
The cleared space fills with the people the market had crowded out. That is what the anger made room for. Not rubble. A waiting room.
Hold that beside the page this section opened with. A synagogue, a man with a withered hand, and people watching to see whether Jesus will heal on the sabbath so they can report him. Mark writes that he looked around at them with anger, and grief, both, in the same glance, and then the sentence keeps going and ends with a hand made whole.
You may have absorbed the idea that the heat disqualifies you. That until you calm down, nothing good can pass through you, and the anger and the care in you are enemies, and one has to die for the other to live. Mark was not working from that rule. He put the anger and the grief in one glance and the healing in the same sentence and left it there.
Your heat has not evicted the rest of you. It is standing next to the rest of you, the way it stood next to grief in that glance.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
Psalm 121:3-4 (KJV)
translation
There is a word at the front of that promise that has moved since 1611. Suffer meant allow. It survives in the old phrase about not suffering fools gladly, which was never about fools causing pain, only about declining to allow them any room. So nothing in the verse is about enduring. It says your foot will not be allowed to slip, because the one on watch does not sleep.
Notice what is being promised, and what is not. The verse does not say nothing will happen to you. Whole books of scripture were written by people to whom a great deal happened. What it says is that the watch is kept, all night, by someone who does not nod off at the post the way every human watchman eventually does. Which means the watch was never actually yours. You have been covering a night shift that was already staffed.
The psalms keep one more word for this hour, and it is stranger. At Psalm 119:148, a psalmist says his eyes prevent the night watches. Prevent

And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
Mark 14:33 (KJV)
translation
Amazed and heavy are both gentler now than they were.
Amazed means astonished today, and usually pleasantly. In the King James it carries an older and harder sense, closer to struck, or appalled, or stopped in your tracks by something horrifying. Heavy sounds like tiredness, or the weight of a long week, and what it carries here is deep distress. The same two words turn up together in Matthew’s account of the same hour.
So the line describes horror arriving in a body, which is a long way from somebody surprised and a little worn out.
If you have read that verse before and found it mild, that is why. The English got gentler over four hundred years and the man in it did not.
One thing about the psalm printed by itself a few leaves back. Eyes held open in the dark, and no words for it, is where that one starts. What follows is a run of questions nobody

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
Psalm 56:8 (KJV)
The image is a bottle for tears and a book with your name in it.
It is a strange thing to picture and it was strange when it was written. The claim underneath it is small and specific, and it is not the claim people usually reach for at a funeral. Nothing here calls the tears necessary. Nothing promises they will be explained later, or traded in for something better. They were counted, and that is all.
A God who has a use for your suffering and a God who is keeping track of it are not the same God. This verse is the second one. Nothing is being made of the tears. They are being kept.
If you cannot pray this week, and a great many people cannot, that verse is still in the past tense about you. The counting is not something you have to do.

For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
Romans 8:24-25 (KJV)
theology
Paul defines the word by subtraction. Something in your hands is not being hoped for, because you have it. So the word only ever names what is missing, and the waiting turns out to be the content of it rather than the obstacle to it.
He is not offering that as a comfort and this book will not hand it over as one. It is a definition.
One honest note about the rest of the chapter. What Paul is waiting for there is the resurrection of the body. The line was never a promise about the thing you want, and it is not going to be lent to you as one here.

The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
Jeremiah 31:3 (KJV)
translation
Those words were spoken to Israel, after the exile, about a people and not about a person. You are reading somebody else’s mail.
The tenses are the thing. The loving is in the past and finished. The drawing is in the past and finished. Neither of them is offered on terms and neither of them is waiting on anything.
Lovingkindness is the odd word in it, and it is not an ordinary English one. Section three takes it apart, with the counting shown.
